DSLD is a systemic disease of the connective tissue. This degenerative bilateral condition results from faulty healing of the
suspensory ligament causing a thickening and hardening of the ligament and/or its branches.
Under normal stresses the collagen fibers in the ligament can tolerate tiny strains and tears.
These minor injuries are repaired with new collagen but horses with DSLD fail to manufacture new collagen and instead help heal the
injury with cartilage.
This causes the ligament to lose its ability to support the horse resulting in lameness and dropping off the fetlocks.
